How to Use the XML Formatter & Validator
- Paste or Upload Your XML: Paste raw XML content into the input editor or click Upload File to import
.xml,.rss, or.svgfiles. - Choose Indentation Spacing: Select between 2 spaces or 4 spaces to match your team's code style conventions.
- Format (Beautify): Click Format XML to parse elements, indent nested tags, and apply clean line breaks.
- Diagnose Syntax Errors: If the document contains unclosed tags or invalid entities, the validator flags the exact parsing error.
- Minify for Production: Click Minify XML to strip whitespace and line breaks, compressing files for SOAP API calls or SVG embeds.
- Copy or Download: Use Copy to copy the output to your clipboard, or Download to save it as
formatted.xml.
Why Format and Validate XML?
XML remains the foundation for critical enterprise protocols, including SOAP web services, RSS/Atom feeds, Android app manifests, SVG vector graphics, and XML sitemaps. However, XML parsers are unforgiving:
- Zero Tolerance for Syntax Errors: Unlike HTML, which browsers attempt to forgive and auto-correct, XML parsers strictly abort execution upon encountering the first unclosed tag or mismatched element.
- Special Character Escaping: Characters like
&and<must be escaped as&and<unless enclosed within ... blocks. - Client-Side Confidentiality: XML configurations often contain internal endpoints and database schemas. All validation runs locally inside your browser, ensuring no data leaves your workstation.
Common XML Syntax Mistakes
- Missing Root Element: Every well-formed XML document must have exactly one single root tag that encloses all other child elements.
- Case Sensitivity: XML tags are strictly case-sensitive.

closed with
will fail parsing immediately. - Unquoted Attributes: In XML, all attribute values must be enclosed in double or single quotes (e.g.
id="101").
