Word Counting & Readability: The Complete Field Guide

Accurate text metrics are critical across journalism, SEO copywriting, academic publishing, and AI prompt engineering. While basic word counters only split on spaces, modern editorial workflows require rigorous sentence boundary detection, syllable-based readability formulas, and token approximations for LLM inference.

How Sentences and Words Are Quantified

  • Word Identification: Words are computed by tokenizing non-empty sequences of characters bounded by whitespace. Hyphenated compound words (e.g. "client-side") are evaluated according to standard lexicographical rules.
  • Terminal Sentence Boundaries: Sentences require terminal punctuation marks (periods, question marks, or exclamation points) immediately followed by whitespace or line breaks. This prevents abbreviations (such as "e.g." or "Dr.") from artificially inflating the sentence count.
  • Paragraph Delimitation: Paragraphs are counted whenever two consecutive line break characters (\n\n) separate distinct text blocks.

Document Length & Target Word Count Benchmarks

Use this reference table to plan content length against standard publishing constraints (assuming standard 12pt typography and single spacing):
